The course will introduce the students to an important field of critical anthropology - the anthropology of development. It is related to post-colonial studies, the critical examination of the relations between the "Global North" and the "Global South", and post-structural theory.

The aim of the course is to analyse development as discourse and as practice through the lens of anthropology. We thus propose the analysis of concepts and ideas underlying development (progress, Third World, sustainability etc.), as well as development projects from different parts of the world. We will discuss multiple perspectives and viewpoints, among them post-coloniality and de-growth. We will also venture into discussing if a future without development is even possible.
